Reunion's Banana Farmers Face Economic Ruin as Fungus Spreads Across Region

Farmers depend entirely on a banana variety that TR4 fungus destroys, with no cure available once soil contamination occurs.

Reunion's banana economy rests on a single catastrophic vulnerability, and the island is racing against a fungus that has already conquered three neighbors. This is not a theoretical risk. It is a countdown disguised as prevention. Gilbert Bafinal, a banana farmer in Ravine des Cabris, derives 90 percent of his income from a single crop. He speaks of sleepless nights. The threat he fears is Tropical Race 4, or TR4, a fungal pathogen that has already devastated plantations in Mayotte, the Comoros, and Madagascar. It has not yet reached Reunion, but the window of prevention is narrowing with each passing month. The economic logic of Reunion's banana sector creates a structural trap. Farmers like Bafinal have built entire livelihoods on the Grande Naine variety, chosen for its market appeal and yield. That same variety is precisely the one most vulnerable to TR4. The fungus penetrates the root system and progressively colonizes the plant's vascular tissue. Leaves yellow. The plant dies. Once established in soil, the pathogen becomes nearly impossible to eradicate, its spores surviving indefinitely, and no chemical treatment can eliminate it. This is not a temporary setback. This is permanent land loss. The economic cascade is straightforward and brutal. If TR4 arrives, farmers must uproot plants, replant with resistant varieties, and wait years for sufficient production to resume. Bafinal acknowledges the resistant options but harbors a legitimate fear: consumer taste preference for the current variety. Change the banana, and you risk losing the market. Do nothing, and you risk losing the farm. The island has experienced banana shortages before, after cyclones, with prices climbing to eight or ten euros per kilogram. TR4 would be categorically different. Certain parcels could become permanently unusable for current varieties, and Reunion would shift toward importation, with transport costs pushing the banana from a staple fruit toward a luxury item. The pathogen's arrival mechanism is mundane and therefore difficult to police. A cutting slipped into luggage. Contaminated soil beneath shoes. In 2025 alone, Reunion's customs officials documented 157 cases of illegal plant product introduction. Approximately 30 percent originated from mainland France, 25 percent from Madagascar, and nearly 20 percent from Mayotte, including goods transshipped through that island from the Comoros. The regulatory framework exists: a prefectural order from April 24, 2017, prohibits fresh plant material without required phytosanitary documentation, whether by mail or in baggage. Violators face up to three years imprisonment and fines equal to twice the seized goods' value. Enforcement, however, depends on consistent vigilance at every point of entry. By contrast, the detection infrastructure is in place, if fragile. Approximately fifty sentinel plots are monitored through an official system managed by the agricultural authority and implemented by the departmental federation for crop protection. The Cirad research center has developed a rapid detection test deployable on-site without heavy laboratory equipment. A positive result requires confirmation by the national food, environmental, and labor safety agency. This is competent preparation, yet competence alone cannot guarantee prevention when the pathogen circulates actively in neighboring territories. Eric Lucas, the agricultural chamber's diversity mission officer, frames the challenge plainly: the fungus is highly present in Mayotte, the Comoros, and Madagascar, and people travel frequently between these islands and Reunion. The message to travelers is unambiguous. The danger is too great to risk bringing back a cutting or plant. Dr. Isabelle Robene, a researcher at Cirad, emphasizes the necessity of strengthening communication and awareness among travelers from affected zones, including biosecurity measures such as boot disinfection after stays in contaminated regions. The prevention effort is real, but it confronts a structural reality: Reunion's agricultural isolation is eroding. As exchanges between Indian Ocean islands intensify, the probability of TR4 arrival increases with each passing season. Whether collective vigilance can hold the fungus at distance, or whether the island's dependence on a single vulnerable crop will eventually collide with a pathogen that has already proven it can travel, is a question Reunion cannot afford to leave unanswered.
